So You Want To Start Your Own Business

by A.J. Kearney ©2005

Starting your own business is great.  The one thing that I suggest is to make sure that it is something that you like.  I tried so many different businesses before I started publishing.  I was looking for a way out and did not know what I liked to do.  The one thing that I did know was that I loved books.  After I published my first one I realized that I love to publish.  I had always wanted to do a magazine for Big Beautiful Women, but instead I created the first full-figure fashion dolls.

Now I run my doll business part-time and my publishing business full-time because it is my passion.  You have to look inside of yourself and find out what it is that you could do every day and not feel like it is a job.

I must caution you about turning hobbies into businesses.  I have heard many women say that once they turn their hobby into a business, the hobby is not fun or relaxing anymore.  So think about this before you turn your hobby into a business.

I have an aunt who can make a mean carrot cake and red velvet cake.  She will only make them for Thanksgiving and Christmas.  She has a lot of business this time of the year.  People want to order them through out the year, but around the holidays she is in the mood to bake, but not during the year.  So she does not sell any cakes during the year.  This is a holiday hobby for her and she gets paid for it.

Also understand that starting a business is definitely not an easy task, especially if you have a family and you run it from home.  So consider these factors too.  You will have to learn real good time management skills and become very organized if you are not.

You will have to at some point sacrifice family and couple time, so it is imperative that you have a supportive and understanding family.  For some this will be a huge challenge, especially if you are in a relationship with someone who likes to be in control.

I hope that this helps.

I wish all of you great success!!!!
